Michael Matulewicz-Crowley is a trial attorney who focuses on complex commercial and intellectual property litigation. He wields his wide-ranging technical experience in web and mobile application technology, aerospace engineering, biologics, medical devices, voice-over-IP telephony, electronics, and enterprise data technology, and his experience before federal district courts, the Federal Circuit, and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board to reach creative victories that best achieve his client's goals. In addition to his patent litigation experience, Michael litigates trade secret and unfair competition claims and advises clients regarding pre-suit patent matters. His work has earned him recognition in Benchmark Litigation and Best Lawyers in America, among others.

Michael’s experience also includes managing technical teams at RJLF in both patent and trade secrets cases, as well as taking and defending dozens of fact and expert depositions, drafting Daubert, summary judgment, and pretrial motions, and successfully briefing and arguing case dispositive motions for summary judgment of no infringement.

Before joining RJLF, Michael was an attorney at Desmarais LLP. During law school, Michael was an active member of NYU Law’s Journal of Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law (JIPEL), where he served on the executive committee and, in that role, reviewed, selected, and edited submitted articles for publication.

Rpresentative Matters

  • Secured a $27 million total award for Droplets, Inc. against Yahoo, Inc., including a $15 million patent infringement verdict and $12 million in pre- and post-judgment interest, following a three-week jury trial in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Took point on the technical infringement case by preparing and conducting the direct examinations of Droplets’ technical expert witness and arguing infringement-related trial motions. After just seven hours of deliberation, the jury found that Yahoo infringed Droplets' patent, which covers pioneering technology for interactive websites.

  • Played a pivotal role in IBM’s successful trial win during its first trial as a patentee in decades, helping to secure a $82.5 million jury verdict on behalf of IBM. Leading up to trial, generally responsible for two of the four patents-in-suit, and worked on a wide-range of issues concerning both the invalidity and infringement of those patents. Briefed and argued a motion for summary judgment of no invalidity regarding one of defendant’s invalidity grounds.

  • Successfully represented Rule14, a technology and data mining company, in a high-stakes patent infringement lawsuit against UiPath Inc., a multi-billion-dollar automation software leader. The case, filed in the Eastern District of Texas, alleged willful infringement of two patents central to Rule14’s process optimization technology. Secured a favorable settlement just weeks before trial.

  • Representing Broadcom in patent litigation against Netflix involving video streaming technology in multiple cases involving hundreds of millions of dollars in potential damages, including ongoing proceedings in the Northern District of California and appeals at the Federal Circuit.

  • Representing XtreamEdge, Inc. and Concurrent Ventures, LLC in a high-stakes patent infringement lawsuit against AMD over groundbreaking data processing unit (DPU) technology. The case, filed in the Western District of Texas, highlights the value of DPUs, which optimize GPU performance for AI applications. 

  • Representing Xtone, Inc. in a patent infringement lawsuit against Amazon involving six patents related to voice service technologies, including Alexa and Alexa-enabled devices. The case seeks to protect Xtone’s innovations and pursue damages and injunctive relief.

  • Representing VideoLabs in enforcing a portfolio of foundational video technology patents against Fortune 500 companies, including Amazon, Netflix, Meta, Apple, and Starz Entertainment. Cases against Amazon and Apple resolved after less than a year of litigation, and a case against Meta settled early in fact discovery. Continuing to represent VideoLabs against Netflix and Starz.

  • Representing Athalonz LLC, an Arizona-based sports footwear company, in a patent infringement lawsuit against Under Armour, alleging unlawful use of patented technology that enhances athletic performance by optimizing weight distribution and force transfer.

  • Representing Malikie Innovations Ltd., the owner of the seminal Blackberry portfolio comprising 32,000 patents spanning wireless, security, messaging, and server technologies. The portfolio includes both Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) and non-SEPs, which have been widely adopted by leading global tech companies and underpin products across industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, enterprise cloud/data center, medical devices, cybersecurity, and AI/ML.


Community & Professional Activities

In his active pro bono practice, Michael has represented a refugee in their application for asylum based on the persecution they suffered due to their sexual orientation, an incarcerated plaintiff in an Eighth Amendment prisoner’s rights litigation, and an aggrieved employee in a workplace discrimination and harassment lawsuit.

Michael is a member of and frequent speaker at The National LGBTQ+ Bar Association. He is also a member of The LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York (LeGaL), both organizations committed to advancing LGBTQ+ justice in and through the legal profession.
